Ear Wax Removal Procedure
Many people who are new to ear microsuction feel a bit unsure about what to expect and that is completely normal. Anything involving your ears can feel sensitive and if you have never had the procedure before, it is natural to have questions or concerns.
At Clear Wave Ear Care, every appointment is tailored to the individual. Even though we outline the general process, no two ears are the same and no two sessions are identical. We take the time to explain each step, check you are comfortable and work at a pace that suits you. Our aim is always to make the experience as calm, reassuring and comfortable as possible.
Most people want to know whether ear microsuction hurts and the honest answer is that for the vast majority of people, it is not painful. It is widely regarded in clinical literature as the safest and most comfortable method of ear wax removal because it does not involve flushing the ear with water or inserting anything deep into the canal. Instead, a small medical suction device gently lifts the wax away while the practitioner keeps the ear canal clearly in view.

What the procedure usually feels like
Most clients describe the sensation as unusual rather than painful. Common experiences include:
- A light pulling or tickling feeling as the wax is lifted.
- A whooshing or humming sound from the suction device.
- A brief cool sensation when the suction tip is close to the ear canal walls.
- A momentary cough reflex if the suction touches a sensitive spot - this is normal and passes quickly.
Clinical guidance and patient feedback consistently show that discomfort is minimal and any sensitivity tends to last only a second or two. If the ear canal is already sore or inflamed (for example, from cotton bud use or infection), you may feel a little more sensitivity, but it should still not be painful. Throughout the appointment, the practitioner can pause, adjust the angle, or slow the pace to keep you comfortable.

What happens at the appointment
🩺 Initial conversation and ear health check
For first appointments only we will begin with a brief discussion about symptoms such as blocked ears, reduced hearing, tinnitus or discomfort. We may require some further medical information. The practitioner then examines the ear canal using an otoscope to understand what type of wax is present, how much there is and whether the ear is suitable for treatment that day. This step ensures the procedure is safe and appropriate. The time allocated for this is 30 minutes but we allow longer if required. Future treatments can be achieved within 30 minutes on most occasions.
🔦 Preparing the equipment and environment
When we visit someone’s home or chosen environment, they usually know the spot where they will feel most comfortable. We simply ask for a clean, safe area with enough light and space to set up the equipment. This helps us carry out the microsuction safely while keeping the experience relaxed and straightforward for the client.
Somewhere to wash and dry hands would be great but we do arrive as clean as we can and use sterile, single use items and clean all other equipment with appropriate cleaning products to make sure there is no risk of spreading germs.
A clean workspace is set up with:
- A medical suction unit
- A range of suction tips
- Ear specula
This preparation allows the practitioner to work precisely and safely.
🪑 Comfortable positioning
The client is seated or reclined so the ear canal is clearly visible. The practitioner will sit on a stool or chair beside the client. Gentle head positioning helps the practitioner maintain a clear view and keeps the client relaxed throughout the procedure.
🌀 Microsuction wax removal
Microsuction is the gold‑standard method used by NHS and ENT specialists. A small suction probe is used to gently remove the wax while the practitioner looks directly into the ear canal through a microscope or camera.
The practitioner talks through each step so the client knows what to expect.
Occasionally we use irrigation and/or manual removal of wax using specialist instruments, this is done whilst viewing the ear canal as we would never go in blindly.
✔️ Final check and aftercare
Once the wax is removed, the practitioner re‑examines the ear to ensure the canal is clear and the eardrum looks healthy. Aftercare advice is given, which may include avoiding cotton buds, monitoring for temporary sensitivity and guidance on when to return if wax builds up again.
